Senior Food Processing Engineer - Job # "Website Posting"

The available position is for a senior engineer with a consulting firm specializing in food processing and packaging systems located in the metro area of Portland, Oregon. A Mechanical Engineering degree from an accredited University Engineering program is required and a minimum of 8 years of progressive engineering experience in the food industry with at least 5 years in food processing plant positions as well as registration / certification as a Professional Engineer. 

The employer is seeking an independent thinker and confident leader with experience in all levels of food production engineering including, operations experience, project management, factory engineering, and engineering management. Some travel is required depending on individual project needs. This could be in the form of intermittent site visits during the design phase of a project to full-time presence at a client’s site during construction and startup.

The successful candidate will actively supervise a 3-5 person CADD drafting team as well as managing other engineers, technical staff and outside consultants / contractors through a project matrix organization. The following sections provide more detail in the required experience, knowledge and skills required for this position:

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Must be able to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, P&ID’s, process flow diagrams.

  • Ability to create (and interpret) computer generated engineering reports with respect to process design parameters and recommended corrections to resolve equipment / system failures and deficiencies.

  • Skilled in conferring with engineers of all disciplines, all levels of company management and all levels and departments of factory personnel (e.g. maintenance, operations, safety, sanitation, etc.) to resolve system design requirements and exchange technical information.

  • Ability to review working food processing and packaging systems or system designs, determine areas for improvement / correction and develop engineering proposals to complete this work.

  • Confident understanding of the steps required to execute a process engineering project from conceptual through final engineering; including construction support and startup / commissioning services.

  • Experienced in reviewing design proposals, specifications, feasibility studies, cost estimates and other technical documents and ability to analyze these against sanitary design methods and other critical process and packaging engineering requirements.

  • Practiced at specifying system components, equipment modifications and design changes to conform to performance specifications.

  • Ability to apply engineering principles to research, design, evaluate, install, operate and maintain food processing equipment, systems and processes.

  • Capable of supervising and assisting in the design / drafting of food processing systems using drafting tools and / or CADD / design software.

  • Experienced in oversight and supervision of food process construction, technical equipment receipt, maintenance methods and operational guidelines for a variety of food processing equipment.

  • Ability to conduct research and on-site studies to analyze the feasibility, design operation and performance of food processing equipment, components and systems through observation and information gathering.

  • Proficient in project management task identification and scheduling as well as cost estimating for both design and complete project implementation.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Knowledge and developed skill in engineering design with respect to food processing regulations and guidelines such as FDA, USDA, CFIA, 3A, PMO and others as well as the ability to determine whether events or processes are incompliance with these.

  • Skilled in applying engineering principles, techniques, and procedures to the design of food processing production equipment and systems including the use of logical reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems.

  • Knowledge of design techniques and principles involved in the production of technical plans, drawings, flow diagrams and physical and mathematical models.

  • Extensive knowledge of production and processing methods and equipment used in the food industry such as raw material receiving, production processes, packaging, storage and shipping, quality control methods / guidelines, cost control, sanitation requirements, and maintenance activities.

  • Ability to identify complex problems by reviewing related information to develop and evaluate solution options.

  • Highly developed communication skills and the ability to exchange ideas / information with all levels of management from shop floor to executives in a variety of media including verbal, written reports, email and by Fax / Phone.
